New EDYS Visiting Professor Ann Frkovich

This fall Beloit's Department of Education and Youth studies has hired a new visiting professor, Ann Frkovich Ann was born and grew up in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Since then she has lived in St. Louis, New York City, and London, but currently lives in Chicago with her husband and daughter.

Ann taught literature and language to middle and high school students in a variety of settings for fifteen years. Much of Ann's academic research is focused on the cross-cultural understandings of Western educators, especially how Chinese students in US classrooms experience and understand school in two cultures. Her ethnographic work includes international field research in West Africa, and in Mainland and costal China.

Ann became interested in education as a young girl, being surrounded by many family members who were teachers. She would often play school, but in college, when she would come home, she would do community puppet theater and teach playwriting to urban elementary school kids. It was then that she realized that what she did as a child for fun, she could do for a career.

In her free time, Ann enjoys writing, reading to her daughter, making great food, listening to live music, and sleeping under the stars as much as possible. She is inspired by art, possibility, choice, and persistence. Her favorite quote is "Peace is loud."

This year, you will find Ann in MI teaching EDYS 101 and EDYS 267.
